Now is the Time Conference

I am so excited to be speaking at the "Now is the Time" conference through UW-Whitewater where I will have the opportunity to speak to adults who work with youth and young adults about the role of social media and its effects on mental health and wellness.

Here is a bit more about my session:

Social Media: Friend or Foe? Understanding the role and implications of social media and technology on youth

Description/Objectives: Cell phones, laptops, tablets…the presence of technology is becoming ubiquitous especially among young people. According to a study done in 2010 at the Pew Research Center, 24% of teens admit to going online “almost constantly” — this is undoubtedly linked to the widespread availability of smartphones,  92% of teens report going online at least once a day, and 56 percent admit they go online “several times” a day which means only 8 percent of teens are able to resist going online every day and 88% of teens ages 13-17 say they have a cell phone with 90% of them say they use them to text. In fact, the average teen sends and receives 30 texts per day (not including messaging apps like Facebook message). While we may not understand it, like it or be familiar with it, social media and technology is here and plays a significant role in young people’s lives and it is our job to embrace that fact and learn both the possibilities and potential dangers to its use. Join me in a discussion about the role technology plays in teenagers' and young adults’ lives and find ways to better engage with and support those whom you are working with.

Already Enough: Yoga for Every Body, As They Are

Join us for a day devoted to self love and connecting with your body. As many of you know, the #ReclaimBeauty project fights for the right every person has to feel beautiful and worthy EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. And yet, too often, we are bogged down by images in the media, people around us, and most infamously "shoulds" and "supposed tos" we have absorbed from the world we live in. We are made to feel like we have to keep chasing some unattainable and unrealistic image and we find ourselves empty and depleated of any positive energy to keep moving forward.

Transformative-- and so we want to make sure more people in the Madison area have the opportunity to see it. (Our first and second screenings are sold out. If we could, we'd put it on every screen in town!) Reserve your tickets now and please spread the word. We need prior reservations in order to secure the screening through Gathr Films.

**Please stay for our post-film discussion!**

Brought to you by la lingerie, llc, Brava Magazine, Head in the Game Fitness, Kinda Kreative, LLC and Larkspur Collaborative Coaching.

Watch the trailer, here.

From HuffPost: "In May 2013, Brumfitt posted a “before and after” photo on Facebook that received more than 3 million “likes” — but this side-by-side wasn’t showing off a flat stomach post-weight loss. The “before” shot was from when she was in a body building contest, and the “after” was post birth. In the video, Brumfitt explains why she thinks the photo got so much attention. “Because heaven forbid a woman can love her body, after,” she said.

Since that image went viral, she has dedicated her time to speaking and writing about body love through her project, Body Image Movement. Now, she’s focusing her efforts on creating the documentary, and has turned to KickStarter to help fund its production."

Table Talk: Creating Change through Conversation

Research estimates that 3 of 4 people in the United States have body image issues and in 2015 alone, approximately $60 billion was spent on diet and weight loss products. Food is meant to be used as healthy nourishment for our body’s survival, a form of entertainment, celebration or form of social engagement with others, and for some food is considered a hobby, career, or form of artwork. Instead, for many, food has become a "bad habit" or a worrisome chore.

Minimalism: Finding Clarity in a Messy Life

Join me in my FREE workshop where we will talk about ways to unclutter the emotional and physical baggage in our lives.

Life is a junk drawer with new baggage getting thrown in everyday. And while many of you are probably thinking, "yeah I know my house could use some decluttering", I dont just mean the physical baggage. Absolutely, living in a culture of consumerism has a dramatic impact on our life but what is tied to all of the "stuff" and has an even bigger impact is the emotional and mental clutter that takes hold in our life. Old fights unresolved, regret, anger, resentment...these insidious figures seep deep into the cracks of our life and even when we think we have cleaned them from the surface, they persist and it is not without more deep work and self-reflection that we can begin to let go of their grip.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Feel free to invite anyone you think would be interested in attending!

Can't wait to see you all there!
